Sips, Tips & Socialize

March 31, 2026 by Dianne Hutton

We recently hosted a social event, Sips, Tips, and Socialize at 365 Golf, which attracted so much interest that we ended up holding two sessions. This event had two main goals: to offer an enjoyable evening and to introduce a different approach to golf lessons. We were also curious about how our clients would react to indoor lessons using technology.

Everyone learns differently, and while some individuals prefer certain teaching methods, we provide both indoor and outdoor lessons that incorporate visual cues and verbal feedback. Although these traditional methods are valuable, technology can elevate coaching even further. For example, if a player consistently slices the ball, technology allows the coach to pinpoint exactly where the swing goes wrong and make immediate adjustments. One member shared in their evaluation that a slight grip adjustment corrected issues with her swing path. Other participants enjoyed seeing their posture and rotation visualized, often being surprised by the difference between what they saw and what they thought they did. The group found the detailed feedback on swing path, face angle at impact, and ball spin particularly helpful. Driving balls into the simulator, which felt like being on an actual course, was especially engaging and aided our learning and improvement.

The team at 365 Golf did an excellent job, and everyone enjoyed the sips, snacks, and camaraderie—both evenings were very successful and enjoyed by all.

Thailand Meet & Greet

March 1, 2026 by admin_account

There was a buzz in the air, a feeling of excitement and anticipation, our meet and greet for the Thailand trip was taking place. As everyone settled in, lively conversations filled the room about what we were most looking forward to in Thailand—from exploring bustling night markets to relaxing on sandy beaches , playing golf and touring. The excitement was palpable, and the group’s camaraderie grew stronger as we shared stories and travel tips, making it clear this journey would be unforgettable.

Thanks to Lisa we were at Juree’s Thai Place Restaurant. It was the perfect place to have our event, the restaurant’s peaceful junglelike ambiance and décor made it part of the authentic experience. The food is fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented by a friendly attentive staff. Most of the group were in attendance, unfortunately a couple were under the weather, two others were already on route and another was out of town.

We loved all the dishes, some favorites were Fried chicken with cashew nuts, fish with tamarind sauce and green curry with chicken. Our food was served family style and was hot and oh so tasty. Overall, Jurees Thai Place Restaurant offered a memorable dining experience with tasty food, a warm atmosphere, and friendly service.

Kristy ended the evening with useful tips to prepare everyone for the upcoming adventure.

Thailand Caddies

January 31, 2026 by Kristy Hutton

The first golf caddies in Thailand appeared on the scene around 40 years ago. At that time, there were only a handful of courses in the country and most of them were located in Bangkok. The caddies were mostly young boys and girls who had been orphaned or abandoned by their families. They would help carry the golfer’s clubs and offer them water or snacks during their round. In exchange, they would receive tips from the golfer. While this may not seem like much, it was actually a very good way for these boys to earn a living.

As golf became more popular so did the need for golf courses, farm land all over the country was converted leaving many farm workers out of work. This prompted the Thai government to insist that all Thailand golf courses must make golf caddies compulsory and thus giving the farm workers a chance for reemployment, this rule is still in place to this day.

A few of us might be feeling a little unsure about having a caddie in Thailand — totally normal! Dianne and I were quite distraught on our first trip back in 2003. But speaking from experience… it turned out to be a wonderful (and very memorable!) part of the trip. Thailand caddies are part of the golf culture there. They’re friendly, helpful, and often bring a bit of fun to your round. They’ll:

  • Drive the cart –  they like to if you let them but usually hang off the back
  • Help with club selection
  • Read those tricky greens
  • Keep score
  • And magically find golf balls you thought were gone forever

Some even add their own charm — like gently pointing where to go and when you miss “wrong tree, madam” or crafting a little bamboo fish while searching the pond for your ball.

Why they’re great (especially if you’re nervous)

  • They know the courses inside out
  • Those grainy greens? They’re experts at reading them
  • Two heads are better than one in this game!
  • They can actually save you strokes

Caddie fees are quite reasonable. A typical tip is 500 baht depending on your experience. Think of it as a small price for extra help, local knowledge, and a smoother round. Caddies often work long hours in the sun so offering them refreshing drinks or snacks can be a nice gesture and they will often share some of their lunch with you. They also appreciate thoughtful gifts like golf ball, tees, or caps especially if they are of good quality or have a unique design. A Canadian souvenir can also be a thoughtful gift showing appreciation for their service while sharing a piece of our your culture.

Golf can be frustrating (we’ve all been there!). Thai culture is very calm and polite, so it’s important to stay kind and patient. A smile goes a long way, even after a bad shot.

What feels unfamiliar at first often becomes one of the most enjoyable and unique parts of golfing in Thailand. Most people end up loving the experience and wondering why we don’t have this everywhere!

Indoor vs Outdoor Golf Lessons

January 31, 2026 by Dianne Hutton

For years, Golfaround has been committed to making golf accessible and enjoyable for players of all skill levels. By offering both indoor and outdoor lessons, Golfaround has created opportunities for golfers to learn in settings that suit their individual needs. Whether it’s the warmth and comfort of an indoor facility or the fresh air of the driving range, the program’s flexibility means that lessons aren’t limited by season or weather.

In Calgary, indoor golf has become increasingly popular and accessible. The city now boasts a growing number of simulator lounges and entertainment ranges, making it easier than ever for people to engage with golf year-round. These spaces aren’t just for seasoned golfers—beginners and casual players are discovering a friendly, welcoming environment to try the sport for the first time.

Golf simulators have revolutionized the way people interact with the game. Using advanced technology to track swing metrics, ball speed, and trajectory, simulators provide instant feedback and allow golfers to play virtual rounds on famous courses from around the world. This means players can practise regardless of weather, time of day, or level of experience, making golf more approachable for everyone.

Advantages of Indoor Golf Lessons:

Flexibility: Indoor lessons can be scheduled at any time, no matter the season or weather, making them ideal for busy people.
Focus on Technique: Without the distraction of ball flight or outdoor elements, golfers can concentrate on improving their swing and fundamentals.
Personalized Coaching: Indoor facilities often provide a controlled environment where instructors can give targeted feedback using the latest technology.
Comfortable Learning: New players especially benefit from a relaxed, supportive setting, free from the pressures of a busy outdoor course.

Advantages of Outdoor Golf Lessons:

Real-World Experience: Outdoor lessons mirror actual playing conditions, helping golfers adapt their skills to the game’s natural challenges.
Visual Feedback: Watching the ball fly through the air can be rewarding and help players connect technique with results.
Enjoyment of Nature: For many, the appeal of golf lies in spending time outdoors, enjoying the sights and sounds of the course.
Ultimately, the best lesson format depends on personal preference. Some learners thrive on seeing immediate results and prefer the outdoors, while others benefit from the focus and flexibility of indoor sessions.

The rise of simulator lounges and entertainment ranges is changing the face of golf. These venues attract individuals who may not have considered themselves golfers, offering a social and interactive experience. Off-course golf is now as much about fun and community as it is about skill development, opening the sport to a wider, more diverse audience.

Indoor golf is more than just a way to pass the winter months—it’s a year-round opportunity to stay active, improve skills, and connect with others. As technology and new facilities continue to shape the game, golf is becoming more accessible and engaging for everyone, from beginners to seasoned players.

Obituary Sylvia

January 31, 2026 by Dianne Hutton

It is with deep sadness we share the passing of Sylvia Madder a longtime member of Golfaround, which she joined in 1998. She was 87 years old. Sylvia was a huge supporter of Golfaround during her professional career and she also traveled with us and supported many of our events.

Sylvia was born in Heward, Saskatchewan. A beloved matriarch and cherished friend, Sylvia’s life was marked by her unwavering dedication to family, her zest for adventure, and her remarkable career accomplishments.

Her professional journey began in Regina and culminated in Calgary, where she proudly earned her Accounting designation (CA). Her career was a testament to her hard work and determination.

In 1961, Sylvia married James Madder, a partnership characterized by love and companionship that lasted until James’s passing in 2008. Although they did not have children, Sylvia’s influence was deeply felt by the many nieces and nephews in both the Madder and McElroy families. To them, she was far more than an aunt; she embodied the role of a grandparent and mother, providing guidance, support, and an abundance of love.

Athletically inclined, Sylvia embraced a life filled with activity. From her youth spent playing softball to her later passions for skiing and golfing, she reveled in the joy of movement and the outdoors. Following Jim’s passing, Sylvia transformed her predetermined bucket list into a vibrant tapestry of both sought-after destinations and unforgettable experiences. Her wanderlust culminated in a memorable cruise to Panama, which she embarked upon just days before her passing.

Sylvia’s legacy is enriched by the countless memories shared by those fortunate enough to know her. As a nurturing figure, she ensured that each member of her family felt valued and cared for in every aspect of their lives. Her spirit, kindness, and infectious laughter will be missed by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with this extraordinary woman.

Happy New Year

December 17, 2025 by Kristy Hutton

Happy New Year.  As we welcome the beginning of another year, we extend our heartfelt wishes to everyone and their loved ones. We hope the new year brings health, happiness, and some adventure. May this year be filled with well-being, joy, and opportunities for exciting experiences for all.

The 2026 golf season is quickly approaching, and we are excited to welcome another year of enjoyment and camaraderie. As we bid farewell to 2025, our anticipation grows for the fresh opportunities and activities that await all our members. We look forward to memorable experiences both on and off the course, embracing another year filled with fellowship, fun, and personal growth through golf.

This past season was notably busy from the outset. The Kick Off Social was held at Valley Ridge Golf Club, followed by the Beginner Golf Orientation at Heritage Pointe, where Beginner golfers played with a mentor on the 3 playing holes. Additionally, a New Member Orientation was hosted at Haysboro Community Hall. While each event was successful, we do miss the simplicity and familiarity of conducting everything at Cottonwood Golf and Country Club out on the island.

Golfaround proudly marks its 30th year in business this season. To commemorate this milestone, we are planning a celebratory event early in the season. Some of you will remember the big party we did for 20 years, the 30 Party will be fun however done on a smaller scale.

Our longstanding tradition continues to evolve, and as many members are aware, Golfaround has recently adjusted its business model. Previous communications have outlined the details of our new approach.

The Beginner Program remains at the heart of Golfaround, representing the foundation upon which our community was built. It all began with “the dirty dozen,” whose journey led to the creation and growth of Golfaround. We continue to believe in the value of lessons to enhance our skills, and we recognize ongoing interest from our members. The Beginner Program will be offered again this season, featuring a series of lessons paired with league play.  Returning Beginners that would like to move to the Intermediate league will have to take Level II lessons prior to moving. The early march programs would fit nicely into your plans to move up.  Clinics spaces are limited due to restricted numbers, so we encourage early registration to avoid disappointment.

As we look ahead to the coming season, members can participate in winter practice sessions at the Eaglequest Golf Dome at Fox Hollow Golf Course, beginning Jan 8. Weekly emails will provide details for those interested in attending. To further prepare for the golf season, Yoga classes will once again be offered this spring. These sessions have received consistently positive feedback and are a great way to promote a healthy, injury-free season.

Our website has been updated, enabling existing members to register starting Jan 1. New member registration will open on Feb 1. Early indoor lessons will be available in March, so we recommend registering promptly if interested.

Challenge and Change

October 31, 2025 by Dianne Hutton

Next year, 2026 will be year thirty for Golfaround, we can’t believe it. It’s remarkable to reflect on the profound changes that have shaped our communities, workplaces, technologies, and daily lives. This newsletter highlights some of the most significant transformations over the past 30 years, celebrating progress while acknowledging ongoing challenges.

Few areas have evolved as dramatically as technology. In 1995, dial-up internet was a luxury, mobile phones were the size of bricks, and “streaming” meant something entirely different. Many Golfaround members did not have e-mail and snail mail, and hand delivery was the way to register. Today we have the luxury of a website and online registration, gone are the days of manually filling out credit card information and then having to phone the information into the merchant service.

In 1997, golf in Calgary experienced a boom. The city’s growing population and rising affluence led to increased interest in recreational activities, and women’s golf was extremely popular. New championship courses such as Priddis Greens, Heritage Pointe, and Sirocco Golf Club opened, reflecting both the demand for premium experiences and the optimism of developers during Calgary’s economic expansion. Municipal courses like Shaganappi Point and McCall Lake remained popular, offering affordable access to the sport for residents. We, Golfaround, were in the right place at the right time. During the next five years we grew from twelve to over 400 and expanded to Edmonton.

The 2008 global financial crisis and subsequent downturns in the Alberta oil sector had a profound impact on Calgary’s golf industry. Membership numbers at private clubs declined, and some courses faced financial difficulties. As the new millennium progressed, Calgary’s demographics began to shift. The city saw an influx of younger families and immigrants, leading to diversification of recreational interests. While traditional golf participation remained strong among older adults and women, younger generations sought out less time-intensive activities. The reduction in participation challenged the golf courses however they welcomed our women’s organizations as we were guaranteed revenue that they could depend upon, and our teaching component helped  assistant golf professionals make ends meet and also increased their client base.

Over the last decade, technological advancements have reshaped the golf experience in Calgary. Online booking systems, and virtual coaching tools have improved convenience and engagement. Indoor simulators and driving ranges, have enabled year-round play despite Calgary’s variable climate. Social media has also played a role in marketing courses and connecting with younger audiences. All these changes impacted Golfaround and our ability to offer the exemplary service our members are used to. Members also now belong to more than one organization and are not as flexible when booking and this has been an ongoing challenge.

The pandemic, beginning in 2020, had a profound effect on golf in Calgary. While restrictions impacted many sports, golf experienced a resurgence as a safe outdoor activity. Courses saw record bookings, and participation rose among diverse age groups. This renewed interest has persisted. In response, many clubs shifted their business models, offering flexible membership structures, pay-as-you-play options, and corporate event packages. In addition, they have reduced access to outside groups, and green fees at some clubs have drastically increased. Over the years, Golfaround has been fortunate to receive steadfast support from several clubs. However, it is disappointing to acknowledge that some of these clubs, after 29 years, no longer require our involvement. This shift has been challenging for our organization as we have valued these long-standing partnerships and the opportunities they created for our members. We still have many golf courses and golf professionals who totally support Golfaround and we are very grateful for their support.

Additionally, the role of golf professionals within these clubs has changed. There is less interest among some professionals in offering the teaching component that has been central to Golfaround’s programs. Furthermore, the rates for golf instruction have increased to levels that are often beyond affordability for many members. These factors have made it increasingly difficult for us to maintain the same level of service and value that our members have come to expect.

The past 30 years have brought incredible change, but the pace of transformation shows no signs of slowing. As we navigate the next decades, we need to embrace innovation, think outside the box and react to the challenges that are upon us. We value our members and want to be the best we can be while meeting your needs, building on our strengths and providing new opportunities.
