Thailand Caddies

January 31, 2026 by Kristy Hutton

The first golf caddies in Thailand appeared on the scene around 40 years ago. At that time, there were only a handful of courses in the country and most of them were located in Bangkok. The caddies were mostly young boys and girls who had been orphaned or abandoned by their families. They would help carry the golfer’s clubs and offer them water or snacks during their round. In exchange, they would receive tips from the golfer. While this may not seem like much, it was actually a very good way for these boys to earn a living.

As golf became more popular so did the need for golf courses, farm land all over the country was converted leaving many farm workers out of work. This prompted the Thai government to insist that all Thailand golf courses must make golf caddies compulsory and thus giving the farm workers a chance for reemployment, this rule is still in place to this day.

A few of us might be feeling a little unsure about having a caddie in Thailand — totally normal! Dianne and I were quite distraught on our first trip back in 2003. But speaking from experience… it turned out to be a wonderful (and very memorable!) part of the trip. Thailand caddies are part of the golf culture there. They’re friendly, helpful, and often bring a bit of fun to your round. They’ll:

  • Drive the cart –  they like to if you let them but usually hang off the back
  • Help with club selection
  • Read those tricky greens
  • Keep score
  • And magically find golf balls you thought were gone forever

Some even add their own charm — like gently pointing where to go and when you miss “wrong tree, madam” or crafting a little bamboo fish while searching the pond for your ball.

Why they’re great (especially if you’re nervous)

  • They know the courses inside out
  • Those grainy greens? They’re experts at reading them
  • Two heads are better than one in this game!
  • They can actually save you strokes

Caddie fees are quite reasonable. A typical tip is 500 baht depending on your experience. Think of it as a small price for extra help, local knowledge, and a smoother round. Caddies often work long hours in the sun so offering them refreshing drinks or snacks can be a nice gesture and they will often share some of their lunch with you. They also appreciate thoughtful gifts like golf ball, tees, or caps especially if they are of good quality or have a unique design. A Canadian souvenir can also be a thoughtful gift showing appreciation for their service while sharing a piece of our your culture.

Golf can be frustrating (we’ve all been there!). Thai culture is very calm and polite, so it’s important to stay kind and patient. A smile goes a long way, even after a bad shot.

What feels unfamiliar at first often becomes one of the most enjoyable and unique parts of golfing in Thailand. Most people end up loving the experience and wondering why we don’t have this everywhere!

Happy New Year

December 17, 2025 by Kristy Hutton

Happy New Year.  As we welcome the beginning of another year, we extend our heartfelt wishes to everyone and their loved ones. We hope the new year brings health, happiness, and some adventure. May this year be filled with well-being, joy, and opportunities for exciting experiences for all.

The 2026 golf season is quickly approaching, and we are excited to welcome another year of enjoyment and camaraderie. As we bid farewell to 2025, our anticipation grows for the fresh opportunities and activities that await all our members. We look forward to memorable experiences both on and off the course, embracing another year filled with fellowship, fun, and personal growth through golf.

This past season was notably busy from the outset. The Kick Off Social was held at Valley Ridge Golf Club, followed by the Beginner Golf Orientation at Heritage Pointe, where Beginner golfers played with a mentor on the 3 playing holes. Additionally, a New Member Orientation was hosted at Haysboro Community Hall. While each event was successful, we do miss the simplicity and familiarity of conducting everything at Cottonwood Golf and Country Club out on the island.

Golfaround proudly marks its 30th year in business this season. To commemorate this milestone, we are planning a celebratory event early in the season. Some of you will remember the big party we did for 20 years, the 30 Party will be fun however done on a smaller scale.

Our longstanding tradition continues to evolve, and as many members are aware, Golfaround has recently adjusted its business model. Previous communications have outlined the details of our new approach.

The Beginner Program remains at the heart of Golfaround, representing the foundation upon which our community was built. It all began with “the dirty dozen,” whose journey led to the creation and growth of Golfaround. We continue to believe in the value of lessons to enhance our skills, and we recognize ongoing interest from our members. The Beginner Program will be offered again this season, featuring a series of lessons paired with league play.  Returning Beginners that would like to move to the Intermediate league will have to take Level II lessons prior to moving. The early march programs would fit nicely into your plans to move up.  Clinics spaces are limited due to restricted numbers, so we encourage early registration to avoid disappointment.

As we look ahead to the coming season, members can participate in winter practice sessions at the Eaglequest Golf Dome at Fox Hollow Golf Course, beginning Jan 8. Weekly emails will provide details for those interested in attending. To further prepare for the golf season, Yoga classes will once again be offered this spring. These sessions have received consistently positive feedback and are a great way to promote a healthy, injury-free season.

Our website has been updated, enabling existing members to register starting Jan 1. New member registration will open on Feb 1. Early indoor lessons will be available in March, so we recommend registering promptly if interested.

Wind Up Mardi Gras Style

September 29, 2025 by Kristy Hutton

The season wrapped up with a lively Mardi Gras-themed event, featuring colorful costumes, decorated golf carts, and enthusiastic participants. One team’s cart stood out and was recognized for their creativity. After golf, everyone enjoyed an authentic Mardi Gras meal and a couple of jazz songs performed by Cindy Holt on flute and Shirley Evans on the trumpet. Thanks to Mulligan Man Darren Roth for his support throughout the day, and to Wingfield Golf Club and their staff for outstanding service. Kristy Moore (Paisley & Pokadots Cookie Co.) made all those Mardi Gras themed cookies found at each place setting. The Golfaround women impressed as always with their spirited costumes and decorations—thanks to all who made the event such a success. Thank you Dianne Andrews for capturing our day and making this fabulous Video

Remembering Alison

September 1, 2025 by Kristy Hutton

Every year, we come together to remember our very dear friend, Alison Taylor. This August marked 19 years since we lost such an incredible person. Alison’s passion for golf and her unwavering support of our Beginners were truly significant and played a vital role in shaping our community.

In honour of Alison, each team once again played a ball for her, which we all left somewhere on the beautiful grounds of D’Arcy Ranch Golf Club. This tradition allows us to celebrate Alison’s legacy and the positive impact she had in our lives and on the course.

Valley Ridge Golf Course

September 1, 2025 by Kristy Hutton

Dianne Andrews has a keen eye for detail, and her perspective on Valley Ridge Golf Course is  insightful. As a long-time member and a dedicated supporter of Golfaround, she consistently excels at sharing her experiences with others. When asked if her day at Valley Ridge could be shared, Dianne graciously agreed.

Dianne’s ability to capture the moments and immerse herself fully in each experience is something that is truly valued. Her vivid recollections and thoughtful observations offer an authentic glimpse into what makes a day at Valley Ridge so special. Her contributions are not only appreciated but also serve as a testament to her passion for both the course and the community.

“Although much of the day was overcast, had a super day in Valley Ridge, my former neighbourhood, golfing at its’ namesake golf course with Adela, Marilyn and Karen of Golfaround. The course was in great shape with lots of hills and dales, elevated tee boxes as well as those you had to hit way up to get to the green. Thanks to Adela, we had our Birdie Juice celebration on a couple of holes.

With all the rain we’ve had the flowers, both landscaped or natural, are in full summer bloom (and I do enjoy taking pictures of them). Spring fruit trees are now showing off their abundance. Had to keep watch for the crows and magpies who are excellent thieves and they actually stole two bags of fruit and nut snacks right off our cart! Meeting up with the rest of the Golfaround ladies at the 19th hole for food and refreshments and recounting of how our game went is always enjoyable. The patio faces a beautifully landscaped pool and even has a little waterfall to add to the ambiance. They host a lot of weddings or special occasions because the photo op’s are so gorgeous.

It was very nostalgic for me because I walked my Buddy all around the numerous nature trails in Valley Ridge and often went for walks in the winter along the cart paths on the course. Used to see a lot more crocuses and wildflowers back then. I miss my Buddy even after all these years.”

Moments of Brillance

July 1, 2025 by Kristy Hutton

MOB’s or Moments of Brillance – we count on you and others to let us know your golf acomplishements, this is what we’ve heard so far this season. Melanie Shelley Par’s  #16 hole at Glen Eagles and those that have played at Glen Eagles know that this is a very tough hole to even make the green. It is a long drop and the wind is usually not your friend from up there. What I want to know is – where is your picture in the picture frame? Beginner Jody Brown gets her 1st birdie on #5 of Shaganappi Valley 9 and Bonnie Williams gets a nice long drive – 200 ish.
