We live where our snow shovel gets regular maintenance so our golf clubs end up in the basement and our game game gets forgotten. When spring comes we drag out our clubs and they feel like foreign objects in our hands. Do they need to? The Winter months can be a productive, enjoyable, and fun time to work on your game. Whether it’s staying loose indoors, or hopping a plane south for a snowbird getaway, let this be a guide to your best golf winter yet.
Staying Loose Indoors can take many forms. We can work on our strength and flexibility either at home or at a gym. Weight training and flexibility are key. The weakest part of most golfers’ bodies is the part they need most: the core. Without strong, pliable muscles in your stomach, hips, butt and lower back, you can’t make a golf swing that is both powerful and technically sound. There are also numerous drills that can be practiced in the confines of your home. I remember when I first learned how to golf working on my grip as I watched TV, I tried practicing my swing too but the clearance was prohibitive and repairs were necessary.
Practicing shots in a heated, domed facility is an option and as you Calgary gals know we do this every Thursday night at the Eaglequest Dome at Fox Hollow. Calgary also has two other indoor practice facilities, The National Golf Academy and Riverside Golf Academy. In addition there are some outdoor enclosed tee boxes at the Golf Canada facility where you can go year round. If you do not have the luxury of a Dome there are golf simulators which will also keep you flexible and will help improve your game.
Winter is a great time to get some instruction from a golf Professional. All of the indoor facilities offer golf lessons during the winter months and there are also other options available to you as well.
Make this a winter to improve your golf game and when the grass gets geener, your shots will get better and your scores will too.
