Rome , the Eternal City, is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world and we will be immersed into the biggest open air museum we have ever seen. We will be in awe of the treasures and masterpieces of Roman Art and architecture. Ancient ruins, incredible art and al fresco dining are among the many reasons why millions of tourists visit Rome each year. The Vatican Museums, Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, Pantheon and Trevi Fountain are all must-see attractions in the Eternal City. The Colosseum is one of the most imposing ancient structures. Imagine it all white, completely covered in splendid travertine stone slabs. It is elliptic in shape in order to hold more spectators. It had four floors; the first three had eighty arches each; the arches on the second and third floors were decorated with huge statues. The piazza or public square is the centre of life in Italy. Rome has many beautiful squares many of which have elaborate historic fountains, statues, or other works of art and there are often churches and bars or cafes on the square. One that we will be sure to see is the Trevi Fountain, this fantastical marble creation of mermen, seahorses, and cascading pools are all presided over by the sea god Neptune. We must be sure to take part in the ritual coin toss, as it is said that if you toss a coin into the Trevi, then you will be assured a return trip to the Eternal City. The Pantheon stands as the most complete Roman structure on earth and has survived 20 centuries of plunder, pillage and invasion.
Vatican City, also called the Holy See, is a tiny sovereign independent state. Vatican City is only .44 sq. km. and has a population of less than 1000. The Holy See is the seat of the Catholic religion and home of the Pope since 1378. The pope lives in the papal apartments in the Vatican and the church of the Pope, St. Peter’s Basilica, is in Vatican City. As the mother church of the Catholic faith and the largest church in Christendom, Saint Peter’s Basilica is one of the top sights to see in Vatican City. With its impressive dome, the focal point of Rome’s city scape, and gilded treasures, Saint Peter’s is without doubt pleasing to the eye. But the church also draws millions of visitors each year because it is the resting place of many former popes including John Paul II and Saint Peter, Christendom’s first pope and the founder of the Catholic Church.
